At New Health Dental, we are committed to helping patients in the Mesa, AZ community achieve optimal oral health. As a holistic dental provider, we believe strongly in educating patients on the oral systemic connection, and the importance of using only safe materials and products for dental procedures. Many patients the dentist about fluoride, so we’d like to take this opportunity to address why we are a fluoride free practice.

The basics about fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in the earth’s crust. You may have heard of fluoride in terms of preventing tooth decay. Back in the 1930s, studies showed that people who drank naturally fluoridated water had dramatically fewer cavities than those who didn’t. As a result, fluoride is often added to a community’s water supply.

The fluoride problem

The issue with fluoride isn’t necessarily the element itself, but rather the amount consumed over a lifetime. Because fluoride can be found in so many substances (toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, drinking water, and fluoride treatments), people end up consuming more than the body needs. That may lead to health problems.

The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology has studied the effects of fluoride for nearly two decades. They find no obvious connection to an increase in oral health from adding fluoride to water supplies.

Additionally, excessive consumption of fluoride may lead to:

  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Thyroid deficiency
  • Decreased glucose tolerance
  • Increased blood lead levels (in children)
  • Dental fluorosis

Choosing a fluoride-free dentist is a personal decision, but one we believe will benefit you in the long term. At New Health Dental, we are committed to providing exceptional dental services that do not expose your body to harmful elements.
