Dangerous Effects of Smoking on Teeth
Everyone has heard about the health effects of smoking and its adverse effects upon your general health. What often is not mentioned is the adverse effects of smoking on teeth. Here are just a few things to consider about smoking teeth if you are a tobacco user:
Smokers Teeth: The Ugly Truth
- One person dies every hour in this country as a result of oral cancer. Tobacco use is the #1 risk factor in oral cancer.
- Smokers often aren’t aware of the fact, but a smoker’s breath smells like a dirty ashtray to a non-smoker. If you want to be attractive to the opposite sex and are currently a smoker, you probably need to limit your “market” to those who smoke as well. Non-smokers will NOT be interested in you.
- A smoker also gives away the fact that they do smoke just by the smell of their clothing, and the environment where they do smoke (car, apartment, home, etc.) Smokers aren’t aware of this, but those who don’t smoke are.
- Tobacco use is a primary risk factor in periodontal gum disease.
- Over 1/2 of all adults over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease. Many periodontists will tell you that you have NO chance of successful treatment of your disease if you are a smoker.
If you are a smoker (or use tobacco in any form), please try to quit. We know it isn’t easy, and may take several attempts before you are successful. Check with your county health department for tips and free products to assist you in stopping your tobacco use. You’ll be happy you did!
