Affordable Dental Implants
Dental implants are basically small titanium posts that are placed in the jaw to securely hold a prosthetic tooth or dental bridge in place. Periodontists often refer to dental implants as artificial tooth roots that provide strong support for both permanent and removable artificial teeth.
Advantages of a Dental Implant
A tooth implant is typically recommended for people who have lost a tooth or teeth as the result of gum disease or an injury. Dentals implants are considered superior to conventional dentures and dental bridges for several reasons.
- A dental implant is more natural looking than a denture or a bridge.
- Tooth implants are permanent. They can be used to hold a permanent artificial tooth or a removable one.
- Unlike dentures, an implant does not slip or fall out. This means less discomfort and better ease of use for the patient.
- Dental implants do not require adjacent teeth to be altered, as is the case of dental bridges.
Candidates for Dental Implants
Dental implants are typically recommended for people with good general and oral health. Generally, anyone who is capable of withstanding a routine oral surgery is considered a good candidate for a tooth implant. Ideal candidates will have gums and bones that are strong enough to hold the implants in place securely.
Types of Dental Implants
In most cases, periodontists these days use what are known as endosteal implants to treat patients. These are small titanium implants that are placed surgically in the bone cavity of the missing tooth. The implant is left in place until the surrounding bone grows around it thereby holding it in place securely. The artificial tooth or teeth is then screwed or fused to the implant. Each implant can hold a permanent prosthetic tooth or a removable one. Sometimes, an implant can hold multiple teeth.
In cases where the patient does not have the bone structure needed to support an endosteal implant, a periodontist might use what is known as a subperiosteal implant. These are lightweight implants that are placed directly on the bone. The implants have small abutments protruding through the gum to hold an artificial tooth or teeth in place.
Dental Implant Procedure
Depending on the amount of work that needs to be done, putting in a tooth implant could take weeks and sometimes even months to accomplish. With an endosteal implant for instance, it might take the bone between 6 and 8 weeks to fully fuse with the implant. Similarly, replacing a single tooth is considerably easier and takes a whole lot less time that replacing a set of missing teeth. In general, dental implants are considered a safe and desirable alternative to dentures and bridges for those who can afford them.
